An important message from our Chair and CEO Steve Demetriou
I am horrified by the recent reports of increased acts of violence and racism against Asians, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, hate crimes targeting members of Asian communities have surged; more than 2800 incidents in the U.S. alone and a 300% increase in the U.K.1
As I read account after account of the incidents, I am reminded of a quote by Desmond Tutu, “If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor.”
We will NOT choose that side. We cannot afford to be neutral. We denounce these deplorable acts.
At Jacobs, we strive for a culture where individuals can bring their best and whole selves to work, thrive in their jobs and the relationships they are building, and feel safe and welcome. Our belief is that if we stand together as colleagues, then the same values and our collective “we are in this together” mindset will flow into and across the communities in which we live – helping to affect sustainable change.
As a global community – and as leaders – it is no longer enough to merely denounce racist acts. We must commit to becoming anti-racists, active allies, and supporters of colleagues of all colors, identities and backgrounds, working to counter and eradicate racism, discrimination and injustice, once and for all.
Enough is enough. Speak up and speak out.
