The Wellbeing Costs of COVID-19 in the UK

Simetrica-Jacobs and the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) published a report looking at the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health and wellbeing of people in the U.K. The report found "substantially worse" levels of wellbeing and psychological distress across the U.K. in April 2020 compared to the same period in 2019. Levels of all measures of wellbeing are at the lowest in the U.K. since records began in 2011 and many parts of the population are over the threshold for psychiatric morbidity.

This paper by Jacobs' Global Technical Lead for Hydropower, Simon Bailey, focuses on the need for developing further long-term energy storage in the U.K. to increase the use of surplus renewables generation, helping the country to reach its objective of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. It also investigates the current market barriers that are preventing further long-term storage developments from being implemented in the U.K. at present and suggests alternative market mechanisms that could be introduced to encourage potential developers to enter the market.
