Learning from Others Across the Company to Grow and Evolve: Ann Miranda's Story
One of our visual design leads for growth & sales shares how learning from others has helped her progress in her career at Jacobs.
Each month in 2023, we’re focusing on one of the 10 essentials we all need for success in these fast-changing times. This month, we're focusing on empathy, which is about taking initiative to build closer relationships with colleagues and clients by asking thoughtful questions and actively listening. One way to learn more about others across the company – including their roles, cultures and perspectives – is by getting involved with one of our employee networks.
Dubai-based Ann Miranda sat down with us to discuss how learning from others – through her role, our communities of practice and our employee networks – has helped her progress in her career at Jacobs.
What is your title today?
Visual Design Lead – Growth & Sales Middle East
What year did you start at Jacobs? What was your title then?
I joined Halcrow (now Jacobs) in 2006 as an architect and urban designer within the consulting business group.
How did you evolve to get to where you are today?
I maintained an open-minded approach when working with the broader creative services team of designers and consistently absorbed new ideas and trends. This exposure helped me become more innovative in my work and allowed me to transition smoothly into a design process facilitator role. By asking the right questions and actively listening to those around me, I've been able to collaborate effectively and design concepts that amplify the value proposition. I also maintain open communication with my managers as they guide and support me in my career goals and aspirations.
What tools did you utilize to help you get to where you are?
Jacobs has a wide range of resources, training, and platforms that helped me hone my skills as a creative designer. Being a part of our employee networks and several communities of practice provided opportunities to get involved in local and global company initiatives that support networking, career development, and progression.
Through my involvement with these groups, I’ve been able to meet others across the company who I might not have met otherwise – hearing about their experiences, building strong relationships, and understanding different perspectives. I am really curious about the experiences of others, whether they live in a different country or do something different for the company, and our employee networks allow me to build these connections and learn more about others across Jacobs.
What tips do you have for others?
- Connect with people who have different backgrounds, experiences and skillsets than you. Take time to ask them questions and really listen to their responses – this is how you really get to know someone and understand what’s important to them.
- Ask for help when you need it. This is not a weakness, and you’ll be surprised how many people within the company are ready to help and mentor you.
- Share your knowledge and work experiences by mentoring others – supporting them in developing their skills and building their confidence. Through mentorship, you can foster closer relationships with those across the business and get to know them on a more personal level.
- Find balance between work and your life outside of work. I always set aside time for traveling, visiting different cities, and discovering their cultural and architectural heritage.
