Jacobs Architectural Apprentice Sundeep Bhudia is currently studying the Level 7 Architectural Apprenticeship to achieve full qualification as an Architect. Here, Sundeep shares more on his apprenticeship journey, and advice on what to consider when exploring options.

What’s your apprenticeship journey been like so far?

I remember being in the uncertain position that thousands of students find themselves in every year – trying to decide their career path with various opportunities but often lacking a clear direction. Straight out of college, I joined Jacobs and embarked on the Level 6 Architectural Apprenticeship at London South Bank University. This opportunity allowed me to gain hands-on experience in the architectural field while continuing my education. Last summer, I proudly completed the four-year Level 6 apprenticeship and immediately enrolled in the Level 7 Architectural Apprenticeship. This next phase will take me to full qualification as an Architect at the end of a further four-year apprenticeship. The supportive environment at Jacobs, combined with the comprehensive training at London South Bank, has equipped me with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in my career. It's been a journey of growth, learning and professional development, and I'm excited for what the future holds. My apprenticeship journey at Jacobs has been incredibly rewarding and transformative.

How do you find the balance between working and studying at the same time?

Being an apprentice means you will have to be working on many things at once. The combination of work and University pushes my time management and organization to the limits, and it is incredibly demanding but equally very rewarding. Working 8 hours a day, 4-days a week, with an intense day at university whilst having to put in hours after work towards the university aspect to prepare for crits and submission requires lots of time management and hard work.

Are there any characteristics that you need to be an apprentice?

A willingness to learn and acquire new skills are crucial, as apprenticeships are all about gaining hands-on experience and knowledge. The apprenticeship also requires efficient time management to balance the demands of work, study and personal life. Maintaining a positive attitude and a proactive approach can significantly enhance your learning experience, making the most out of the apprenticeship opportunity.

Are there any considerations to think about when doing an apprenticeship?

When considering an apprenticeship, it's important to be prepared for the commitment of time and effort required for both learning and working. Balancing work, study and personal life is crucial to avoid burnout. When deciding if this is the right route for you, ensure the apprenticeship aligns with your long-term career goals and provides the necessary skills and experience. Take advantage of mentorship opportunities to learn from experienced professionals and build a good relationship with your mentor. Networking during your apprenticeship is also beneficial and can help build professional connections for your future career. Most importantly, the need to be open to receiving and acting on feedback is crucial in helping to improve your skills.

Is there anything you’re particularly proud of?

For the last three years, I was shortlisted as a finalist in the Construction Services category for the Multicultural Apprenticeship Awards. In partnership with Pearson, the Multicultural Apprenticeship Awards showcase the outstanding work and achievement of apprentices from multicultural backgrounds in Britain and inspire other apprentices to reach their full potential. Although I did not win the final category award, I was able to take the recognition as a positive step to further promote the architectural route as an apprenticeship. Being shortlisted as a finalist within the Asian community was highly recognized and allowed me to speak up and further educate those from various backgrounds about apprenticeships, breaking the stigma of going to university the traditional way.

Is there any advice that you’d give to anyone who’s thinking about their options?

Before applying for an apprenticeship, make sure you research the industry and role that you are interested in. Once you have a job role in mind, try to get some work experience that relates to it.  Work experience is a must in any industry, employers look for candidates who are keen on learning and willing to get some experience.

I do not regret my decision one bit, and for anyone who may be in the same position as me or is considering an Apprenticeship, I would say go for it – you have nothing to lose! I believe it is a great way of gaining your qualifications for free and while gaining years of industry experience.
