Eric Boschert

Eric Boschert, a battery process Subject Matter Expert (SME) at Jacobs, is leveraging his manufacturing background to fuel his excitement and curiosity for the battery industry. He blends knowledge from various engineering fields to help our clients produce the next generation of emerging technologies.

Eric joined Jacobs in 2023 and has a diverse background working in various operations, process engineering and product development roles. He describes the highlight of his role as being the bridge between battery technology and facility design, such as helping clients understand how process requirements impact building design. For example, lower dry room dew point targets significantly increase air handling requirements and cost. Eric’s background helps our clients evaluate project-specific requirements early on, saving costs and simplifying future manufacturing operations.

In his first role, Eric worked for an aerospace composites supplier whose carbon fiber composites were used globally to manufacture important components like fuselages in modern commercial jetliners. After Eric transitioned to the battery industry in 2017, he produced battery cells that are currently powering the latest generation of U.S. government satellites, products for Formula 1 and Formula E race cars and next-generation solid-state batteries.

“Manufacturing high-quality battery cells is fascinating – from the initial slurry mixing to the formation of the solid electrolyte interface. Each step requires an understanding of electrochemistry principles that drive the manufacturing process and product performance.”

What’s your favorite part of your role?

Any time I get to deep dive into battery manufacturing with experts in the field is a great day. Talking tech and manufacturing practices with other battery nerds is so much fun. There is always something new to learn. Particularly, for new technologies that require new manufacturing techniques and are actively scaling!

What excites you about the future of this industry?

The transition to electric vehicles is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be at the forefront of innovation. It is rare to experience such a large transition from one technology to another at an automotive scale. This change brings with it unprecedented challenges and opportunities – with an ability to execute being the difference between success and failure. I'm inspired by industry-leading companies pushing the boundaries of what is possible and am grateful to be part of their success.

Can you share one piece of advice?

If you’re interested in joining this industry, be prepared for fast-paced work and accelerated timelines. Projects need to stay on schedule to meet the global demand for electrification. The good news is the industry is full of talented and motivated individuals who want to succeed with you. Don’t be afraid to ask for help from the community.

What is the biggest challenge in your market?

Getting to market. Building large battery cell gigafactories is an immense undertaking and ramping up is hard. We’re seeing many companies working through those challenges right now.

What do you enjoy most about being part of #OurJacobs?

We truly have experts in every field. Every time I look around for a specific skill set, I’m impressed at the breadth of knowledge available both in North America and globally.
