Unlocking Asset Insights Through Smarter Standards and Assessments

Creating best practice with asset information benchmarking

The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) estate covers 17 nuclear sites, with a workforce of over 17,000 employees, working with thousands of supply chain partners. As a result, the highest asset management standards are needed to achieve the best results in this complex decommissioning environment. A critical part of this management is the comprehension and education of the role of asset information across the NDA. Improving asset information quality and accessibility is fundamental to asset management improvements.

To achieve this, the partnership between the NDA, Jacobs and PA Consulting needed to convey the importance of asset information in delivering broader strategic plans and to identify a starting point for the maturity of the asset information across the estate. This process began with determining how well asset information is understood and managed to support estate design and operations.

The collaboration established the system maturity level in line with the Institute of Asset Management (IAM) maturity scale. Jacobs and PA Consulting worked with the NDA to develop a bespoke self-assessment survey to determine this. These self-assessment findings were validated by document reviews and supporting initiatives.

Once the system maturity level was defined, the partnership proposed improvements to improve data management and created best practice for the whole estate. Discussions and stakeholder workshops were held to challenge and augment the findings. From these workshops, the teams also identified and prioritized the improvement opportunities for asset information management across the estate. This has resulted in the OneNDA asset information working group who are defining the first cross-group asset information specification, creating a common taxonomy for all new assets and, where practical, reengineering into our current asset base.

Now, the NDA has stress-tested guidance in asset information benchmarking and can use it to empower the delivery of its key business objectives.

“Achieving a common understanding of what consistent asset information management can bring to the NDA mission delivery provides us with a golden opportunity to optimize what we do and make best use of our existing and future resources to significantly reduce time, costs and risks.”
